It’s Not Too Late

Ella One is emergency contraception that can be used within five days or 120 hours of having unprotected sex. It belongs to the family of “morning after” medication that is known to lessen the chance of becoming pregnant after suspected contraception failure or unprotected sex.

What is Emergency Contraception?

Emergency contraception is birth control that makes it much less likely for you to get pregnant if used within five days after having unprotected sex. The drug contains ulipristal acetate and has been found to be highly effective and well-tolerated, and is believed to be more effective than other emergency contraception.

What if I don’t take them the morning after?

Even though it is paired with other contraception as “morning after” medication, it can be used for up to five days after sex without birth control, you think your birth control might have failed, or you were made to have sex against your will. The sooner you take it, the better chance it will work.

Who can use it?

Almost any woman can safely use emergency contraception such as Ella One. There are many women who have unintended pregnancies because they know very little about emergency contraception and how to use them.

How does it really work?

The science behind emergency contraception is not yet completely understood, but it is thought that by preventing ovulation and fertilization, and by altering the lining of the womb, it is able to prevent unwanted pregnancies. When a woman has her normal menstrual cycle, a mature egg is released from the ovaries in a process called ovulation. The ovary produces a hormone called progesterone, which prevents the release of any more eggs. Ulipristal tricks the body into thinking ovulation has already occurred which prevents the release of any eggs.

Ulipristal also increases the thickness of mucus at the cervix which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb and therefore unable to fertilize any egg that may be there. Ulipristal is also thought to change the lining of the womb and preventing it from being prepared for a fertilized egg.

Can it be used with other medication?

It is always important to discuss all medications being taken with your doctor or pharmacist, including over the counter medicines to make certain the combined medication is safe.

Can it be used with regularly used hormonal contraception?

Regularly used hormonal contraception can be affected differently when combined with Ella One. Refer to your doctor, pharmacist, or family planning clinic for more information.
